Moderated by Greencastle, this panel featured industry experts representing executive teams, business leaders, and IT managers. The panelists discussed their experiences with managing project teams, navigating remote/in-person working environments, adapting to organizational cultures, and essential skills for project managers.
Some key takeaways:
–Bad news doesn’t get better with time: project managers should be focused on communicating what’s happening on a project, not what they think a stakeholder wants to hear. Issues are inevitable — communicate when they happen and what the team is doing to get the project back on track.
–No one-size-fits-all approaches to project management: every organization has a unique culture and style of leadership. While there are certainly some consistent elements across all projects, project managers must ensure that they’re adapting their approach to align with organizational culture.
–Never miss an opportunity to listen: project managers are rarely the technical experts on the teams they lead. Taking the time to listen to subject matter experts, shows team members that a project manager values their input and recognizes the need for their expertise in achieving project success.
–Remote teams don’t excuse absent leaders: remote work is a reality of modern workplaces, especially in the case of geographically dispersed project teams. Despite these challenges, finding ways to engage team members is still an essential element of project management. Something as simple as turning cameras on during a call can provide a personal touch that shows team members are present and available.
Project planning is only part of the story when it comes to project success. Arguably more important is the team’s ability to work cohesively and effectively. Project managers can significantly improve these working relationships by focusing on developing strong project relationships and modeling the behaviors they seek from their teams.
