3 Tips Before You Start Your ERP Migration

By Greencastle Consulting

In the world of digital transformations – ERP migrations can be a daunting undertaking for a business. The process can be complex and time-consuming if there is a lack of planning. Here’s 3 tips to help you plan your ERP migration before you start.

Determine the Scope

This is a critical step before starting any project, but it’s especially important when migrating an ERP system. Between on-site servers, external drives, and other business solutions there are a multitude of data sources that must be accounted for.

It’s important to involve key stakeholders early – they can help identify the data sources that are most relevant to their roles, what must be preserved, and what formats that data is in. All of this is essential to informing a successful strategy for your ERP migration.

Once data sources are identified, make sure to invest time in developing a migration roadmap. Establish initial timelines and milestones. These will help inform your resource requirements, aid in vendor selection, and allow your organization to minimize disruptions to the overall migration.

Identify Your Migration Team

The right team can make or break an ERP migration. The members of your data migration team should have a combination of industry expertise and knowledge of your company’s unique processes. They should also represent a variety of functions across your business, including operations and information technology.

Previous experience with an ERP migration can be hugely beneficial when building your migration team. While your ERP provider will provide expertise in the data migration process, having an internal resource that can help guide you can help streamline the project. If your organization is lacking in ERP migration experience, consider bringing in an external resource to help fill that role.

Embrace Change Management

While an ERP migration may appear to be an IT project on the surface, it really is an enterprise-level initiative that impacts every employee. Having an effective change management plan in place can help drive adoption of your new ERP system and make the transition as smooth as possible.

You need to communicate why the change is happening, the benefits this new system brings, impacts to existing processes, and when to expect this all to happen. Beyond communicating the change, it’s important to research skill gaps and design training to help bridge them. A comprehensive change management plan is built with the needs of users in mind and aims to keep them well-informed of the change – ultimately streamlining the ERP migration.
