5 Minutes with Scotty Hopp, Consultant

In this edition of ‘5 Minutes With…’ we’re talking with Scotty Hopp. 

 Scotty joined the Greencastle team through our SkillBridge Program before being hired on as a full-time Consultant. Before Greencastle, he spent 4 in the U.S. Marine Corps.   

We’ll be dropping a follow request for his dog as soon as we’re done here! 

What are your hobbies and how did you get into them? 

When it comes to hobbies, I would say that I am a jack of all trades but a master of none. I enjoy learning and trying new things. This winter I invested in an epic pass and have been attempting to snowboard…yes, I did say attempting. During the summer I enjoy being around water, whether that involves hanging out around the pool or going on a beach trip for the weekend. My nonseasonal-dependent hobbies include projects around the house, going to the gym, or working on anything with an engine. My father was the one who was able to introduce me to many different hobbies, and I am thankful that he was able to pass down some knowledge when it comes to working on projects and becoming a petrolhead. I love anything that keeps my mind firing on all cylinders. 

Breakfast, lunch, or dinner? And why?

Now this question is extremely difficult. Those who know me understand that I will eat anything and everything whenever I can. While I thoroughly enjoy cooking steaks and foods with the highest amount of protein on my Blackstone, I would have to lean towards breakfast. I wake up starving, and there is nothing better than cooking my usual 6 eggs with spinach and peppers, along with a cup of steel-cut oats to get the day started. While I eat the same breakfast almost every morning, I have found that I am extremely more productive with it than without it.  

What career advice would you give to your younger self? 

Try everything and embrace failure. What you may think you want to be as you grow up may not be what you should be or want to be at all. Live your life to a high standard, and make sure that you are in a position to jump on any opportunities once they arrive. Looking back, I have found that my failures of the past were the most beneficial learning points for how I have developed as a person.  I believe that Mark Cuban said it best “You just have to try different things, even if 99% of them fail. You only have to be right one time.” 

What got you interested in your current field of work? 

I found an interest in this field during my time in the Marine Corps. When I was in the Marine Corps, I found that my level of satisfaction comes from service, and that involves watching those around me win. I would say the most important aspect of Project Management is leadership. If you are a strong leader, you will be a strong project manager so this field of work naturally interests me. I love working on a team and the project’s success is a byproduct of being able to assist your team in a way that they can win. I have also always been interested in technology, so working as an IT Project Manager is truly a dream “job” for me. It feels weird even calling it a job. 

Are you active on social media or do you prefer to be more private? 

I grew up on the west coast but live on the east. I have family and friends all over the country as well.  As a result, I’ve found myself active on social media. Social media is also a way that I can keep in touch with my close friends from my time in the Marines.  I can share my life with those who matter to me, as I believe it serves as the family “photobook” of today. Even my dog has social media, but he uses it solely for business purposes… (@branchmanagerbentley for those interested). 

What’s an essential part of your daily routine? 

Working in a hybrid environment, I’ve found an interest in optimizing my daily routine. Over the last few months, I’ve started to incorporate the cold plunge into my morning routine as soon as I get out of bed. The cold plunge has drastically impacted my “ramp-up” time for my mornings and lets me start my morning meetings with the maximal amount of mental energy. After my meetings and tasks for work are done for the day, I find myself going to the gym out of habit. For me, the gym is my “off switch” from work mode, back to my daily life and I just happen to get a benefit from it. My daily routine is very structured, but I have found that I perform better that way.
